Matt Moore, who filled in for an injured Patrick Mahomes for 2 1/2 games last season, has signed a one-year deal to return to the Chiefs.

The deal is for the league veteran minimum, a source told The Star.

Yahoo Sports’ Terez Paylor was first to report the signing.

Moore originally signed with the Chiefs in August when primary backup Chad Henne was lost for the season with an ankle injury. Moore, who had played in the NFL for 11 season, was serving as a high school assistant coach when he signed with the Chiefs.

His first action came in the second quarter of the seventh game, when Mahomes suffered a dislocated knee. Moore stepped in and finished up a 30-6 victory. Moore completed 10 of 19 for 117 yards and a touchdown.

Moore started the next two games, a 31-24 loss to the Green Bay Packers and a 26-23 victory over the Minnesota Vikings.

Moore appeared in four games. He completed 59 of 91 for 659 yards with four touchdowns, no interceptions and a 100.9 passer rating.

“Matt did a great job,” Mahomes said after he returned to the lineup.

The Chiefs re-signed Henne to a two-year deal in March. Also on the roster is Jordan Ta’amu, a second-year pro who started five games for the St. Louis BattleHawks of the XFL this spring before the league closed early because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

To make room on the roster for Moore, the Chiefs waived rookie quarterback Shea Patterson, a source confirmed with The Star. Patterson joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan.
