A Message From Jim Smith
I'm researching the Smith family of Johnson Co., AR. This has been a most difficult family to research. What I have is that David Smith m. Sarah 'Sally' Gallimore in TN. David & Sarah were mostly Cherokee Indian. David was the son of James Smith. And Sarah was the daughter of Jennie Lee Gallimore (or Gallymore). All were Cherokee indians. James was mixed, but mostly Cherokee according to a deposition by John R. Gourd, Cherokee Council Member in 1896, Tahlequah, OK.
David and Sarah had Claiborn, Sarah, William, John, and Richard. They probably had more, but I haven't found any other information on them. Sarah was born in Alabama, probably the Northern part. I suspect the Smith family may have lived in Madison Co., AL, but I haven't proven this.
They were Cherokee indians who lived as white people. I only recently learned of the Cherokee part and am able to document it from an application for Cherokee Land Allotment in 1896, done by Sarah Ann (Smith) Grider.
I have tried connecting them to Alabama and Tennessee, but have not been able.
If anyone would like to have copies of the application for the land allotment, just email me and I'll let you know how much for copies. My email is: mdfreels@yahoo.com .
I would love to share any information on decendants. I have quite a bit on the Smiths, Griders, and their descendants. But as always, am looking for other leads.
Does anyone have the family for Samuel Cabbin Smith? I suspect a connection to my James Smith. I believe that it could be James Claiborn Smith, since Claiborn may be names after his grandfather.
Also, I have found that David's middle name is Editon. David Editon Smith. Could 'Editon' be a name we need to check on?
James Smith was known as 'Cherokee Jim Smith' by the white men of the area he lived in.He is said to have been at Chatanooga, TN and Northern Alabama.
Thanks,
Mike
